Our breeding philosophy
At Grand Smirnof Kennels, we do not breed Labradors only for colour or appearance. Colour can be beautiful, but it is never the main reason for a breeding decision.
Our priority is the whole dog: health, temperament, working ability, trainability, structure and suitability for the right home.
We look for Labradors with natural drive, confidence, cooperation, good nerves, a strong desire to retrieve and a reliable off-switch. For us, a good working-line Labrador should not only be exciting in training — it should also be pleasant to live with.
UK and Irish working bloodlines
Our Labradors are based on carefully selected UK and Irish working lines. These bloodlines are known for natural retrieving ability, handler focus, intelligence and strong working temperament.
We use these lines because they support the type of Labrador we want to breed: active, trainable, connected, confident and capable of real work, while still being suitable for carefully selected family homes.
Our aim is not to produce extreme dogs. Our aim is to produce balanced working Labradors with natural ability, good temperament and the right mind for training and everyday life.

Our breeding dogs are health tested before being used in our breeding programme. Depending on the dog and breeding plan, this includes:

Many of our Labradors are dark yellow, often called fox red. Fox red is not a separate breed or a rare “special type” of Labrador — it is a shade of yellow Labrador.
We appreciate strong colour, but our breeding decisions are based first on health, temperament, working ability and pedigree. A beautiful colour is valuable only when it comes together with the right mind, soundness and suitability for the home.
How our puppies are raised
Our Labrador puppies are raised with careful attention to early development, confidence and connection with people.
During their first weeks, puppies are exposed to normal everyday life in a calm and structured way. Depending on age and development, this may include handling, different surfaces, household sounds, people, other dogs, outdoor experiences and age-appropriate confidence-building.

Puppies themselves are too young for hip and elbow testing, but our breeding dogs are health tested before being used in our breeding programme. This may include hips, elbows, eyes and DNA testing.
Are fox red Labradors purebred Labradors?
Yes. Fox red is a darker shade of yellow Labrador. It is not a separate breed.
Do you sell puppies outside Finland?
Yes, suitable international enquiries are welcome. Puppy export depends on age, destination country rules and practical travel arrangements.
How do you choose which puppy goes to which home?
